Minions is an upcoming 2015 American 3D computer-animated comedy film and a prequel/spin-off to Despicable Me (2010) and Despicable Me 2 (2013). It is being produced by Illumination Entertainment for Universal Pictures. Written by Brian Lynch, it will be directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, and produced by Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy. Sandra Bullock voices Scarlet Overkill, the villain of the film and Jon Hamm voices her husband, inventor Herb Overkill. The film premiered on June 11, 2015, in London, United Kingdom, and is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 10, 2015. The film was first foreshadowed in the ending credits of Despicable Me 2, where Stuart, Kevin and Bob, three of Gru's Minions, are seen auditioning for the film.
Plot:
Minions are small, yellow creatures who have existed since the beginning of time, evolving from single-celled organisms into beings who have only one purpose: to serve history's most despicable masters. After accidentally destroying all their masters, including a T. Rex, Genghis Khan, Napoleon and Dracula, they decide to isolate themselves from the world and start a new life in Antarctica. By 1968, the lack of a master drives them into depression, so Kevin comes up with a plan to find a new one. Joined by the rebellious teenager Stuart and kid Bob, they arrive at a villain convention, where they compete for the right to be henchmen for Scarlet Overkill, a stylish and ambitious villain determined to dominate the world and become the first female super-villain. Travelling through New York City, they end up in London, where they must confront a threat to the existence of all Minions.
Despicable Me is a 2010 American 3D computer-animated comedy film from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment that was released on July 9, 2010 in the United States. It is Illumination Entertainment's first film. It was directed by Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud, based on an original story by Sergio Pablos.
The film stars the voice of Steve Carell as Gru, a supervillain who adopts three girls (voiced by Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Elsie Fisher) from an orphanage; and the voice of Jason Segel as Vector, a rival of Gru who steals the Great Pyramid of Giza. When Gru learns of Vector's heist, he plans an even greater heist: to shrink and steal the Earth's moon.
The film was animated by the French animation studio Mac Guff, which was later acquired by Illumination Entertainment.
The film earned positive reviews from critics, and grossed over $543 million worldwide, against a budget of $69 million. It launched a franchise with a series of films, including a sequel in 2013, to be followed by a 2015 spin-off film featuring Gru's Minions as the main characters, and Despicable Me 3 in 2017.
